Students in Chattahoochee Technical College’s Television Production Technology program are joining hundreds of others in the fight against childhood cancer by producing Rally Idol – a benefit concert being held on January 28 at the Buckhead Theatre. Proceeds from the event will assist the Rally Foundation in its efforts to find better treatments and, ultimately, cures for childhood cancer.
Rally Idol is the vision of an Atlanta teenager who wanted to do something for her friend, Ruby, and families like Ruby’s who are fighting cancer. With the help of her family, Courtney Roach, 13, created the live music show, according to the event’s website.
The college became involved with the event after CTC Television Production Technology instructor Ian Feinberg was contacted by the show’s creators. The show, which follows an American Idol format, will showcase six Rally Kids touched by childhood cancer, who will perform live on stage for American Idols-turned-celebrity judges Haley Reinhart, Clark Beckham, Anthony Fedorov and Casey Abrams.
“The performers are children who have either dealt with cancer or lost family members from cancer,” Feinberg said.
During the show, about 15 Chattahoochee Tech students will be responsible for manning cameras and will perform control responsibilities such as video switching, mixing audio, playing back video, audio files and graphics, and controlling camera exposure levels. Additionally, the show will have to be edited for broadcast and graphics/animation will also need to be created for the show’s open.
“In addition to training, it provides students material to put on a demo or portfolio to show potential employers the caliber of their work,” Feinberg said. “It establishes our program as relevant in the professional arena – not only creating programming for commercial broadcast, but also contributing to worthwhile causes in the community.”
Taught at the college’s Mountain View Campus, Television Production Technology students at CTC learn the behind-the-scene skills necessary to produce TV news, documentaries and entertainment shows. In addition to learning to operate cameras in the studio and in the field, students learn about production, directing, writing, lighting, editing, audio, graphics and digital animation skills.
