More than 150 Allatoona Elementary School students recently received a lesson on germs from Chattahoochee Technical College microbiology students. As part of a service learning project, 23 students from CTC Biology instructor Bhavya Mathur’s class designed and presented a lesson plan for third and fourth graders, educating them about good germs, bad germs, and the importance of handwashing. A demonstration on how to properly wash hands was also given.

One student from Mathurs class commented that for the third-grade class, the project served “as a good introduction into the world of science and hopefully triggered some future interest in the profession. As for our group members, I feel that it was a good opportunity for us to reinforce our knowledge by explaining it to others.”

The service learning project was such a success that the college has been invited to perform this educational endeavor annually, Mathurs said.
