Chattahoochee Tech Interiors students balancing work, family and college can now earn a degree or diploma on their own time. Starting in the 2017 Fall Semester, students enrolled in the Interiors program will have an evening course option — an initiative that is designed to increase course access.

Interiors instructor Ginger Burton said the curriculum for the evening course is the same as the daytime classes, adding that the evening course option is simply a way to meet the needs of the student population who are seeking flexibility in class scheduling options.

“We are starting with Interior Design Fundamentals in the evening, which offers the introduction to the career of interior design,” she said. “This course allows new students to take a full course load option by registering for History of Interiors and Architecture in an online format, along with Introduction to Computers and any other General Education courses needed. Looking ahead to the 2018 Spring Semester, students will be offered evening options in drafting and software for interior design to continue in their degree or diploma plan.”

The new evening course option for Interior Design Fundamentals is currently open to 24 students for the fall term, and the class will be taught at the college’s Woodstock Campus, located at 8371 Main Street.

“We would love to see a strong cohort that can continue through the program together,” Burton said. “We hope to meet the needs of our students balancing work, family and life responsibilities who have a desire to learn and grow in an interior design career. In addition, we hope to be meeting the job demands we are seeing from business and industry with well-trained job seekers prepared specifically for career tasks.”

The Interiors program relocated from the college’s Mountain View Campus to the Woodstock Campus at the start of the 2016 Fall Semester, and since the move, Burton said enrollment has been strong.

“This could be partly attributed to the campus move with such a convenient location in the heart of historic, downtown Woodstock and the first-class facilities,” she said. “We are also seeing the job market for qualified interior designers grow. Job opportunities are increasing with our service area enjoying great economic growth.”

Another contributing factor to the high enrollment figures is the Kitchen and Bath Certificate program which was rolled out last fall. This certificate program is intended to prepare students to work as specialized interior designers with the knowledge of design layouts, material options, lighting requirements, and business practices. Students also learn presentation techniques and how to apply solutions for environmental and energy efficiency as well as accessibility within these critical rooms of residences.
