(Marietta, Ga. – Oct. 17, 2017)
On Friday, Oct. 28, students from KSU’s Supported Employment Transition Services Program (SETS) paid a visit to Chattahoochee Technical College’s Culinary Arts Program to learn to create a new meal during National Disability Awareness Month.
The project brought together students in the kitchen at the Mountain View Campus of Chattahoochee Technical College where the SETS students prepared homemade meal items for themselves and their mentors. When they left, they took with them a packet of easy-to-prepare recipes they can share with their families.
“This is one of the best events we do every year. Everyone who participates gets a lot out of it,” CTC Chef Hillary Gallagher said. “In addition to learning how to cook a new meal, we take the SETS students for a tour of the campus where they can see the building, see the video production studio, things like that. It’s always a great day when SETS students visit.”
Following the preparation and cooking of the meal — which included Caesar salad, pork goulash and banana pudding — the group enjoyed the meal together.
Operated through Cobb County Schools, the SETS Program students are given the opportunity to gain independence while working in a real-world setting. The ultimate goal of the Supported Employment Transition Services Program is to prepare students for a life of independence. After exiting the program, students are given the opportunity to seek employment with the support of a supported employment vendor.
Chattahoochee Technical College offers diploma and degree programs through its respected Culinary Arts program at the Mountain View Campus. The 65-hour degree program prepares students for the culinary profession. The program emphasizes a combination of culinary theory and practical application necessary for successful employment. Graduates who are current practitioners will benefit through enhancement of career potential. Those entering the culinary arts field will be prepared to pursue diverse opportunities as cooks, bakers or caterers/culinary managers.
